Why Documentary Filmmakers Chose Chief

Documentary filmmaker Carloeen Moise explains why Chief was a natural fit for her upcoming documentary 'Defying All Odds'...

When it was time to find partners who would be glad to have their products be part of our perks for the crowdfunding campaign of our second documentary film, Defying All Odds, Chief was an obvious choice. The feature recounts the story of Dr Terry Wahls’, an American MD who recovered from Multiple Sclerosis (an autoimmune disease), using diet and other lifestyle interventions.

Chief’s values of healthy living and clean whole foods consumption are reflected in the food they produce, thus putting them in direct alignment with our film’s message. And one of their newly added product, a delicious and nutritious collagen bar is a great nutritional supplement for many of us who do not consume enough collagen in our diets–especially a specific group of people which I will talk about later.

You see, nutritional collagen is widely known for its health benefits when it comes to skin, hair and nails. It helps to repair damage to our connective tissues since it contains several amino acids (such as arginine and glycine) and proteins that are essential for hair, skin and nail repair as well as their growth. My nutritionist friend and Chief's co-founder Veronika, wrote an excellent blog post on the subject.

Skip on nutritional collagen and, over time, you are almost certain to get brittle nails, dry skin and hair prone to breakage.

Still, as she mentioned in that same article, the benefits of nutritional collagen do not stop there: one of its lesser-known advantages concerns the healing the gut. Indeed, the amino acids contained in collagen also have healing properties which help build the gut’s mucosa. Collagen also assists us in the production of hydrochloric acid, the acid in our stomachs, which in turn helps us breakdown the fats and proteins we eat. Without the precious acid, digestion (and thus absorption) would be nearly impossible.

Which brings me to my next point: autoimmune disease.

It is a very complex subject, with multiple illnesses falling under that category, illnesses which themselves come with their own layers of intricacies… but with all the scientific research to date (and everything I have read on the subject in the context of filmmaking), it is safe to say that most people with an autoimmune (aka AI) disease will, to some extent, display symptoms associated with leaky gut syndrome.

I’m sure you know where I’m going with this by now: if collagen plays a vital role in repairing the gut and in hydrochloric acid production, then this crucial protein needs to be an integral part of all sufferer’s diet.

The convenience of a collagen bar

One of the great sources of nutritional collagen is bone broth. I make my own from bones that come from grass-fed cows and I love it. The only problem with this is the time it takes to make: three to four hours if you want to do things right. So when the guys at Chief announced that they had engineered a collagen bar, I thought it would be the perfect perk item for people on the go who care about collagen supplementation–especially in the context of illness recovery–and reached out to them about adding their scrumptious bar to some of our campaign perks.
