Feels a bit surreal to be saying this but a bit of a pinch-me moment to find out we made the state finals for the Telstra Business Awards in the “Promoting Sustainability” category! Congrats to all our fellow finalists too.
What’ve we been doing in sustainability?
1. Reducing water waste
Our first lifecycle assessment showed us the cranberries we used to use in some of our products use a LOT of water. Switching to dried currants dramatically reduced the water required to grow our dried fruit.
2. Reducing landfill
We worked with Australia’s Meat and Livestock Association to help research and establish Australia’s collagen protein market. Up until recently, beef hides were a waste product from the beef industry and most would go to landfill. But, just like the skin of fish, beef hides are a fantastic source of collagen protein which is a hot commodity in the global health food market. This year we’ll save over 180,000kg of cow hides going to landfill by converting them into an odourless, tasteless protein source for some of our products.
3. Supporting Aussie Farmers
We’re a proud supporter of Thankful for Farmers who in turn support Australian farmers and regional communities to become more environmentally and financially sustainable. For example, this includes a $20,000 grant to support remote, rural and regional communities to prepare for the impacts of drought. A big part of this is implementing more sustainable farming practices.
4. Supporting Regenerative Farming practices
From the beginning, we committed to using organic or regeneratively farmed, grass-fed Australian beef. Regenerative farming goes beyond “sustainable”, it actively improves soil health, boosts biodiversity, and helps sequester carbon. In other words, it’s part of the climate solution, not the problem.
5. Avoiding ingredients that are destructive to the planet
Where possible, we work with small-scale producers, cutting out unnecessary processing and keeping our ingredient lists clean and simple. You won’t find industrial seed oils, fillers, or artificial sweeteners in our products. That’s not just a health decision - those ingredients often rely on destructive farming practices and long, energy-intensive supply chains.
6. Moving to kraft paper boxes
We’ve moved our packaging to kraft boxes instead colourful printed boxes because kraft paper is made using fewer bleaching and dyeing chemicals, reducing chemical runoff and pollution during manufacturing. They’re also more easily recyclable and recyclers prefer them because they require less energy and water to recycle, and there’s no need to remove heavy inks, laminates, or foils. Many colourful boxes use plastic films or UV coatings so using kraft avoids this entirely, reducing the risk of micro-plastics leaching into the environment.
What’s next?
Our goal isn’t perfection, we just want to make consistent steps to being better. Sustainability isn’t a campaign or a single product line for us - it’s built into how we operate. Every time we launch something new, we ask: is this good for people and the planet?
Thank you
A huge thanks for all your support. We wouldn't be anywhere or have any impact without the support of our amazing community and we're forever grateful 🙏
