Chief Grass-Fed Collagen Protein Powder is a hydrolysed bovine collagen powder made from Australian grass-fed cattle.
Hydrolysed collagen is collagen that has been broken down into smaller chains called collagen peptides, which makes it easy to dissolve into hot or cold food and drinks.
Chief Collagen naturally provides Type I and Type III collagen peptides and is particularly rich in the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline.
No artificial flavours. No artificial sweeteners. No sugar alcohols. No fillers.
Collagen supplements are commonly used to increase dietary intake of collagen peptides and their characteristic amino acids, particularly glycine, proline and hydroxyproline.
Research into hydrolysed collagen supplementation has investigated areas including:
- Skin hydration and elasticity
- Joint comfort and function
- Connective tissue
- Tendons and ligaments
- Bone health
Collagen shouldn't be thought of as a replacement for a balanced diet, sufficient total protein intake or strength training.
It is also different from whey protein. If your main goal is building muscle, a complete protein such as whey is generally the more appropriate primary protein source.
Yes. Chief Collagen is independently laboratory tested as part of Chief's quality-control process.
Testing includes contaminants such as:
- Lead
- Arsenic
- Cadmium
- Mercury
- Chromium
- Glyphosate
We publish testing information so customers can see what has actually been tested rather than relying only on a generic βlab testedβ claim.
What does third-party tested mean?
Third-party testing means a product sample is analysed by an independent laboratory rather than relying solely on testing performed by the brand or manufacturer itself.

Avoid the hidden nasties in your protein powder
You might be surprised by whatβs really inside some of the top-selling protein powders. Look closely and you'll find a cocktail of ultra-processed junk your body doesnβt need and they're all things we leave out:
LikeΒ sucraloseΒ andΒ acesulfame potassiumΒ which are linked to gut disruption and long-term health concerns.
LikeΒ soy lecithinΒ are ultra-processed and often completely unnecessary.
IncludingΒ tartrazineΒ andΒ Allura Red, banned or restricted in parts of the world.
LikeΒ maltodextrinΒ used to mask cheap ingredients, as a bulking agent to save cost and extend shelf life. But, it spikes blood sugar faster than table sugar and may also disrupt gut bacteria.
Independent lab results
Our Collagen is Lab Tested for Heavy Metals & Glyphosate
We test for common contaminants, including heavy metals and glyphosate residue, to verify the product meets Chief specification limits and relevant regulatory limits.
Heavy metals screen
Checks for unwanted metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, which we want to keep as low as possible.
Glyphosate screen
Checks for glyphosate residue, a widely used herbicide, as part of our product quality and purity testing.
| What we tested | Regulatory limit | Chief specification limit | Lab result | Complies? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy Metals Screen | ||||
| Lead An unwanted heavy metal we test for as part of our contaminant screen. | β€ 0.1 mg/kg for meat Not set for milk |
β€ 0.1 mg/kg | 0.07 mg/kg | Yes |
| Arsenic A naturally occurring contaminant that can be present in soil and water. | β€ 1.0 mg/kg for cereals Not set for milk |
β€ 0.06 mg/kg | 0.06 mg/kg (LOQ) | Yes |
| Cadmium An unwanted heavy metal we screen for to confirm it remains within Chief specification limits. | β€ 0.5 mg/kg for cocoa products | β€ 0.05 mg/kg | 0.036 mg/kg | Yes |
| Mercury An unwanted heavy metal we test for to confirm it is very low. | β€ 0.1 mg/kg for salt Not set for milk |
β€ 0.01 mg/kg | 0.002 mg/kg (LOQ) | Yes |
| Chromium A metal included in this screening panel to confirm it remains within Chief specification limits. | Not set | β€ 5 mg/kg | 2.2 mg/kg | Yes |
| Glyphosate Screen | ||||
| Glyphosate A widely used herbicide we screen for as part of our quality testing. | Not detected | Not detected | <0.5 mg/kg (LOQ) | Yes |
Because we use real food ingredients, trace amounts of naturally occurring metals can sometimes be present from soil and water. Thatβs why we test β to make sure levels are low, monitored and within strict safety limits. All heavy metals tested and glyphosate residue comply with regulatory standards. LOQ means Limit of Quantification, which is the lowest level the lab can reliably measure. Original lab report available upon request.

RORY K.Verified BuyerReviewingGrass-fed Collagen Protein Powder - Dark Chocolate - Rated 5 out of 5 stars1 week agoGreat tasting and easily digested
I have been a Chief customer for awhile now and my go to products are the Collagen Protein powder and Collagen bars, especially peanut butter. Both are yummy products and don't leave any bloating.
The bars are a great keto snack during and after activities such as biking and hiking.
The protein powder easily mixes in a smoothie and fills me enough with a few extras in it for lunch.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes, our flavoured versions have 11g of protein (unflavoured is 14g protein per 15g serve). This is collagen peptides for skin, joints, gut and daily protein top-up, not a 25g post-gym whey scoop. Stack with food or Chief whey if you want both.
-
Dissolves in hot or cold liquids. Grab our rechargeable frother for the easiest protein mixing you've ever had.
-
Yes. Hydrolysed collagen peptides can be mixed into hot drinks such as coffee.
-
There is no single required time of day to take collagen. For most people, consistency is more useful than trying to take it at a particular time.
-
Collagen is best for supporting muscle recovery, joints, skin, hair, nails, and gut health.Β
WheyΒ is best for supporting muscle growth, weight management and to stabilise blood sugar levels.
-
Collagen peptides are made by extracting collagen from animal connective tissue and then breaking the larger collagen proteins into smaller chains of amino acids using a process called hydrolysis.
For bovine collagen, the collagen-rich material is cleaned and processed, then the collagen is typically hydrolysed using enzymes. The resulting smaller peptides are filtered, concentrated and dried into a fine powder.
This process is what turns collagen into hydrolysed collagen peptides that dissolve easily in hot or cold liquids.
Hydrolysis does not create a synthetic proteinβit simply breaks naturally occurring collagen into smaller peptide chains that are easier to use in food and supplements.
-
Collagen isnβt a complete protein in the same way whey is, because it doesnβt contain meaningful amounts of L-tryptophan which is one of the nine essential amino acids your body canβt produce on its own.
But that doesnβt mean collagen canβt be used as a daily protein supplement, or that it has no role in supporting muscle and recovery. Collagen is still protein; it simply has a different amino acid profile.
Where collagen really shines is that itβs naturally rich in glycine, proline and hydroxyproline - amino acids that are important building blocks for connective tissue, including tendons, ligaments, joints, skin, hair and the gut lining.
Protein supplements are designed to supplement your diet, not replace all other sources of protein. So if youβre eating a varied wholefood diet that includes foods like meat, eggs, dairy, fish, nuts or seeds, youβre very unlikely to be relying on collagen as your only source of essential amino acids - including L-tryptophan.
In short: whey is more complete for muscle protein synthesis, while collagen offers a different set of amino acids that are useful addition to a well-rounded diet.
-
Yes, when consumed, collagen peptides (the broken-down form of collagen) are easily digested and absorbed in the digestive tract. Collagen peptides are small, bioactive fragments of collagen that are produced by breaking down the full collagen molecule into smaller chains of amino acids. This process is called hydrolysation, which makes collagen more easily digestible and absorbable by the body.
-
While there has been a lot of debate about collagen supplementation, there is now a large body of evidence supporting the benefits of collagen, many of which you can find here. Think of it like whey protein - everyone knows it's good for muscle growth because whey contains the building blocks your body needs to grow your own muscle. Collagen protein contains the building blocks of collagen, providing your body the raw material it needs to grow your own collagen.
-
Absolutely - that's when many women need collagen the most. Still, check with your healthcare provider first since they know your specific situation.
-
Yes! It's an essential nutrient. Collagen is also the most abundant protein in the body, so keeping up a healthy stock of collagen is important for us all, including kids who are growing fast.
-
The collagen protein itself is relatively tasteless and won't affect the taste of your coffee, smoothies, baking, cooking and more. You can't taste the collagen in our flavoured versions.
